AEA Bike Club Meeting Minutes
May 13, 1999
Attendees: Lots! Co-president Grace Peng presided. Co-president Mark
Polak was away on travel.
Bike to Work Week Plans:
It is important to get our ducks in a row because Grace is here this week but
on travel next week. Mark is on travel this week but here all next week. There
are still a few volunteer opportunities available. Please email Grace or Mark if
you can do any of the things in BoldFace and Underlined.
- Douglas Street Closure:
The city of El Segundo and Sante Fe Railroad
are celebrating Bike to Work Week by closing down Douglas Street to repair the
railroad crossing. Only the section right at the tracks (between Utah and El
Segundo Blvd.) will be closed down. The work should take place between Tuesday
May 18 and Thursday May 20.
- Tuesday:
Nonpolluting Commuting Challenge
- Pairs of commuters coming in from several areas have been identified and
contacted.
- The pairs need to decide amongst themselves a mutually convenient time
and place to meet on Tuesday morning.
- They time themselves from the meeting place to AGO.
- Report the location of the starting point and the beginning and ending
times to Mark.L.Polak@aero.org
via email.
- This could be a real challenge due to the Douglas street closure but we
are resourceful and will overcome.
- Wednesday:
Bike fair at the AGO mall during lunch. There will be 4
tables for the vendors plus one each for the club and for LA Co. Bike
Coalition (LACBC).
- Peggy and Cheryl (plus Dan?) will help set up starting at 1030. Mark
will also be there for the entire period.
- Dan will dig up and bring the old map showing all the places that people
bike commute from.
- Any volunteers to help staff the club table or take down and put
away the stuff?
- Thursday:
Bike To Work Day
- The group ride starts at Torrance Beach (the south end of the beach
path) at 600. Mark will lead the ride but we still need a volunteer to
ride sweep. They will ride at a leisurely pace. No one will be
dropped.
- The Douglas street closure will force us to change the route slightly.
We will cut inland from the beach at Valley/Ardmore, ride a short section of
Sepulveda and then go through the Hughes/Raytheon parking lot. Cheryl has
already notified Hughes/Raytheon and they are amenable.
- John Gower may drive his truck with the riders along the Sepulveda
stretch as a buffer between cyclists and the traffic.
- Bike 'n Bagel continental breakfast will be served outside the South
Lobby from 700 to 815. Peggy will bring bagels and coffee. Cheryl will bring
juice.
- Free t-shirts and energy bars will be given out to everyone who comes to
the south lobby with a bike. You need not ride with the group to collect
your loot. Encourage your coworkers to try bicycle commuting and tell them
about the bribes!
- LACBC will be there as well.
- We know that not all the bicycle commuters are coming to the south
lobby. In order to estimate the number of 'stealth' bicycle commuters,
physical security agreed to count the number of bicycle riders coming
through the AGO gates. Can someone on the AF side get the AF to do the
same? We can then compare security's numbers with the number that
sign in at the south lobby. If you know any 'stealth' riders, please
encourage them to drop by and sign in. They need not stay for breakfast or
take the loot they are entitled to. We want to identify as many riders as
possible.
- Sunday:
Time to pat ourselves on the back at the volunteers' Potluck
BBQ
- Time:
Sunday late afternoon/evening (exact time will be announced
next week).
- Place:
Mark and Grace's house at 2110A Nelson Ave, Redondo Beach. We
will make a map and pass that out on Wednesday at the fair and Thursday by
the south lobby.
- Bring:
Something to grill and something to share. The club will
provide napkins, paper plates, utensils, cups, and soft drinks.
The Website is evolving. Check out the list of ride buddies and maybe
even add your name to the list. We will add a listing of people looking for
riding partners for recreational rides. We will discuss the specifics at our
next meeting.
