On many occasions in the past, the AEA bicycle club has held a Saturday ride referred to as the "mini-death ride". The name comes after the event held each summer in Markleeville, CA. This event is a series of hill climbs centered around its starting point. The goal is to climb as many mountain passes around Markleeville as possible. We here in the south bay area have a similiar event. We drive to a summit called Saddle Peak in the local Santa Monica Mountains and ride down 5 of the surrounding roads -- Stunt, Fernwood, Las Flores, Tuna Canyon, and Piuma -- and then ride back UP each of these steep hills. To do all 5 of the climbs in one day can easily tests anyone's endurance. One can do as many passes as they want by resting at the summit after each climb. So besides being a good workout training event, it is also a social event as well.
